Taking Down a Historic Truss

The old steel truss bridge over the Puyallup River had to come down to make way for the SR 167 Completion Project. Its lead based coatings made it one of the most complex hazardous materials jobs in the region. Working for Atkinson Construction, Fresh Family built and maintained containment around the truss, managed the abrasive blast media and paint waste, and supported the cutting and dismantling of the steel.

Once abatement was complete, the truss sections were loaded onto self propelled transporters and moved off site. Every drum, load and manifest was tracked. Waste was profiled and designated under Washington State dangerous waste rules, coordinated with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, and shipped to permitted disposal facilities.
